Two Adcom/Optiem/Uppercut clients enjoyed expansive and major mention in the Plain Dealer a while back.

In a Sunday edition, client Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Cleveland story landed on the first page of the PD’s Forum section and concluded on an inside page. The previous day, KeyBank and the Adcom instigated Snuggie promotion at the Q filled a major portion of the Metro section, starting on the section’s first page.

* * * *

Big Brothers Big Sisters is all about mentoring. The organization seeks to enlist responsible adults to serve as role models for young people. Positive mentoring can increase a child’s chance of graduating from high school and avoiding destructive behaviors, the organization believes.

Cavaliers forward, Darnell Jackson serves as a spokesman for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Cleveland. In a forceful statement Jackson said, “One hundred boys are waiting for mentors right now. I am speaking to you men who want to make a difference and are willing to give just a little time and be someone they can trust. These are good kids. They just need a good mentor. They need you.”

The organization has launched the Darnell Jackson Mentoring Challenge. The challenge is finding 100 mentors and raising $100,000 in 100 days.

Joe Kubic is the account supervisor. Big Brothers Big Sisters has chapters nationwide. Headquarters: Philadelphia.

* * * *

Just the day before the Big Brothers Big Sisters story appeared, client Keybank got first page Metro section notice. The previous evening — Snuggie Night at the Q — the Cavaliers earned a Guinness World Record when 20,562 fleece Snuggie blankets were distributed to Cavs fans.

According to the award, that represented the most fleece blankets of one color (in this case, red) ever gathered in one place. A Guinness adjudicator came to Cleveland to confirm the citation. He said that of 60,000 submissions for world record status annually only 3% meet Guinness world record standards.

The Snuggie idea originated with Adcom. “We pitched it first to KeyBank, then to the Cavs, then to the Snuggie people,” said Mike Gorman, who headed up a cast of dozens from Adcom, Optiem and Uppercut who pushed the complex project forward. To total success.

Every year is full of anniversaries. Some draw much attention. Many attract scant, or no, notice.

Among the “scant” are two: Bubble wrap and the beer can.

Bubble wrap has been around for 50 years, the beer can for 75.

Update is grateful to Adam Zuccaro, who, as the Adcom/Optiem/Uppercut senior executive sleuth, brought these two salient events to our attention.

Bubble wrap is a pliable transparent plastic material commonly used for packing fragile items. Regularly spaced, protruding air-filled hemispheres (“bubbles”) provide cushioning for precious or breakable items.

Bubble Wrap was created by two engineers, Alfred Fielding and Marc Chavannes. The term is a brand of Sealed Air Corp., Elmwood, NJ. The company was founded in 1960 by the two inventors.

Some people use the name generically for similar products, often termed air bubble packing or packaging or just bubble wrapping. Sealed Air denotes its product as a brand of “cushioning material.”

Now to the beer can: 2010 is its 75th anniversary year.

New Jersey’s Gottfried Krueger Brewing Co. churned out the world’s first beer can in 1935, stocking select shelves in Richmond, Virginia., as a market test. The experiment took off as American drinkers quickly took to drinking their beer from cans.

Beer drinkers, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, drink more beer from cans than from bottles. American beer drinkers, the bureau says, ingest an average of 22 gallons of beer each year.

Canned beer hit store shelves in 1935. But beer’s history goes back at least 6,000 years, to ancient Iraq no less.
